About.
I enjoy the idea that my thoughts on pottery & making work will be a continual evolution. Pausing to reflect on early ideas and developing new ways to make work based on the continual learning and explorations of being a potter. Thoughts, methods & influences seem to stick around and find their way into each piece you make. They become your signature.
I appreciate the interaction one develops with a piece of pottery be it functional or sculptural. How certain works demand more of your attention & how they find their place within a home. I find myself spending many hours trying understand why particular pieces hold more meaning & presence than others and why it is I decided to pick something up & hold it in my hand.
Pottery, being mainly 3 dimensional also uses the assistance of light to display its surface character & form. This is one reason why, for me, the use of photography sits alongside physically making the work. It aids in my visual documentation, research, influences & practice but is also becomes its own artwork, still life images or landscapes. Photography goes hand in hand with the objects I create, images aid in weaving the story of a series or idea.
Essentially, I like to think that when I create a piece - be it a mug or a more complex idea, that every part is considered. It’s form, weight, balance, character & story. When all of these elements sit together in harmony, these are the works that sit in front of me every morning on my kitchen table or on my studio bench. These are the pieces I pick up every day.
